Greensburg Central Catholic’s Tim Johnson participates in football camp, despite eligibility struggles

August 15, 2011 – It was great to see that Tim Johnson (former QB/OLB for Kiski Area) was practicing today with the Greensburg Central Catholic Centurions. Johnson also played basketball for Kiski Area and transferred to GCC after basketball season.  A May 15th report in the Tribune Review stated that the WPIAL had denied Johnson’s football eligibility at GCC, and a July 21st hearing by the PIAA upheld the decision. Both Boards of Control denied Johnson’s eligibility on grounds that they felt it was athletically motivated.

Today, when asked if everything had come through alright with the hearings and Control Boards, Johnson replied, “Not really.”

SG met Tim Johnson in June at Murrysville Sportzone, where he was playing dek hockey. At that time, Johnson had said his transfer was due to the fact that he had always been a Catholic.

According to a July 22nd report in the Post-Gazette, Johnson will still be eligible to play basketball.

Does this mean ‘basketball’ is now a sacrament?

Sportsgazelle.com IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT

August 14, 2011 - The Weekly Calendar has changed!

Starting the week of Monday, August 15, 2011, all posts will happen on or just before the weekend. This is for two purposes:

1) To best capture the fall football in a timely way.

2) To actually do my job as a sportswriter/web manager for Sports Town!

The schedule is week-to-week right now, so be checking the calendar for updates. Things will settle down once we all get into the school year and find our rhythms.

In the meantime, I’m keeping a varsity drumline in the garage to help my rhythm along…

Sportsgazelle.com Playbook…

August 12, 2011 – Often, the things of this world need to be readjusted.

From Wednesday, August 10th  - The second-worst parking job Norwin Senior High School has ever seen. (The first worst belongs to the Norwin Bus Driver who took the Volleyball team to Chartiers Valley during WPIALs. I don’t know where the guy parked, but the folks running the PA system complained like he’d parked that bus in their living rooms.

My own readjustment will be with the Weekly Calendar. Continue reading

Move over, NFL: Norwin Football has Mini Camp

August 10, 2011 – What is “football mini-camp?” Is it when football players stay in tiny tents and roast tiny marshmellows?

Can you spot the mini-football camper in this video? HINT: he’s a faster sprinter than I am.

Before today, I thought that mini-camp is when NFL teams get together for three days each May to remind the media that they are still around and that they’d like more money and attention.

At Norwin, things are different. Continue reading

“When you’re on the ice, there’s no time-out.” Words of the Franklin Regional Hockey Club

August 5, 2011 – We can thank Franklin Regional’s Head Coach Anthony DeFazio for the above quote from last night.

People to watch for: 1 – Brett Trottier skates with more balance than a bowl of Total. 2 – Coach Mike Reilly moves the net from the blue line, just for fun. 3 – Brandon Lovas wonders why there’s a camera in the middle of ‘suicides.’ 4 – Matt Barnett puts the hit on Jake Stebbins in the middle of a 2-on-2 drill.

Greensburg Central Catholic Football Preview

August 4, 2011 – It’s eleven days ’till football camp, soccer camp, and every other kind of sports camp you can imagine. The only activity that won’t be happening at that time is… camping.

The quarterbacks in the video are rising sophomores Chase Keller and Shane Phillips.

In the meantime, the above video is Class-AA power Greensburg Central Catholic scoring a bunch of long-bomb touchdowns. I don’t know why I was feelin’ the bagpipe music. I just was.
