Soccer Scrimmage #2: Oakland Catholic at Gateway

August 30, 2011 – The Lady Gators took this one, two goals to nil. Here are the highlights:

What’s in the video: 1- Goal by Danielle Kravits (Carly Seneca assist) 2- Goal by Courtney Rozeck (Emily Stevens assist) 3- Sweet save by Gateway (sophomores DeeDee Bentley and Allie Warsaw both play goalkeeper for Gateway) 4- Hand ball call.

First off, I can’t emphasize enough how athletic the Gateway team is. They’re fit and can dribble. I wouldn’t be surprised if they make another playoff run this year, in spite of their youth. Last year, the Gators lost seven seniors. This year, all but two on Gateway’s roster are underclassmen.

Secondly, I wonder about the hand ball call in the video. It looked to me like the Gateway player was going for the ball with her feet, when it bounced up and hit her in the torso, possibly brushing a hand. Usually, if the ball hits a hand, it’s legal. If the hand hits the ball, it’s a handball.  So, if anyone wants to look at the video and post a comment or a message board thread clearing this one up, I’d appreciate it. Otherwise, I’ll just say to the ref:

Where were you when Ireland’s men’s team was trying to qualify for the World Cup, huh?

Lastly, I’ll post this picture. I like signs.
